The trainer can be incredibly boring, especially compared to riding one's favorite route on a perfect spring day. But let me tell you why you should embrace the trainer this winter.
1. Safety: With darkness setting in earlier, and snow, ice and sand on the roads or soon to come, riding in the winter can be dangerous. When you're on the trainer, you don't have to worry about any of that. Just hop on and ride.
2. Specificity: Trainers are great for accomplishing a specific workout. Need to do interval work? How about a time trial threshold test? The trainer makes it so much easier to stick to specific workouts since you don't have to worry about traffic lights, other riders or any other distractions.
3. Time: Many experts say that because you're never coasting on a trainer, your workouts are more efficient. Some estimate that an hour on the trainer is equivalent to 90 minutes or more on the road. So you're getting a better workout in less time. Add to that the fact that you don't have to drive to the park or wherever it is you're riding, and you save even more time. Head over to the trainer and get started.
4. Boredom can be overcome: The number one complaint about riding on the trainer is that it can be boring. But that's easily overcome. Set up in front of the television and catch up on your favorite show or movie. Pump some motivating music. Check out some of the great riding DVDs like The Sufferfest or Spinervals. There are all kinds of ways to beat the boredom that can come with riding on a trainer.
